Smartphones arrived on the mobile phones scene and changed the way we work. We are no longer tied to our desks. These help us stay connected with the office, check e-mail, browse the web, record/play multimedia and much more while we are out on the road. They offer features that help us manage the intricacies of our life – from scheduling business meetings to planning for a family holiday.

If you are looking for a business phone with Google applications, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry and Apple applications, you no longer have to essentially burn a hole into your pocket.

There is a variety of business smartphones in the market that leaves a customer spoilt with options, more so, confused. After long hours spent in drilling a squad of contenders, we have arrived at the top three budget smartphones for business.

Apple iPhone 3G – 16GB, black (AT&T)

The iPhone 3G, as the name says, brings with it the power of 3G technology. Along with Microsoft Exchange server e-mail and a compliance with a plethora of third party software from iPhone Application Store, this is the phone that is here to stay.

The voice quality is one of the best in the market with a loud volume and very less background noise. At 5.4 x 2.4 inches and 4.7 ounces, it is a small yet powerful phone.

The most significant addition to the original iPhone is the Application Store which now enables users to write whatever custom programs they can. Just that it needs to get through Apple’s stringent developer screening and software testing processes.

Another interesting addition is the character recognition support for languages that are based on logo-graphs, for example, Traditional Chinese. Also, the phone comes with a localized keyboard for more than twenty local languages worldwide. The touch-screen keyboard however is a point of bother and is nowhere close to the convenience of a physical QWERTY keyboard. The support for Microsoft Exchange is simple enough to configure and provides the basic functionalities like e-mail, calendar, contacts, etc with ease. The simple calculator transforms into a scientific calculator when you turn the phone on its side. The battery life is 5 hours of continuous talking but it drops when one uses the 3G network.

The iPhone 3G’s usability and seamless integration of service and software, desktop and mobile and media and internet is very difficult to ignore and thus makes it one of the top three budget smartphones for business.

RIM BlackBerry Curve 8330 (Sprint)

The RIM BlackBerry Curve 8330 is a top-notch smartphone with power and a wide array of capabilities. It looks smooth and professional with rubber sides and charcoal grey body.

The vast 2.5 inch screen gives it an elegant look. With a weight of 4 ounces it is a power-packed bundle – a 312 MHz processor and 32MB of internal RAM. The BlackBerry OS is just as good as it gets and responds to commands very promptly. The voice quality is high with clear, crisp sound and near-zero background buzz.

It has a built-in POP, IMAP and Web client that supports a maximum of 10 accounts using the BlackBerry Internet Solution. It is compatible with BlackBerry Enterprise Solution for integration with Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domina and Novell GroupWise.

There is an array of blackberry applications from Sprint including an extensive list of IM applications, Sprint TV, Sprint Music Store and Handmark Pocket Express that delivers rich information like news, sports, stock prices, travel information, weather and more.

The 2 mega-pixel camera with auto-focus features and an LED flash takes decent pictures and it offers fair quality of video recording of 240 x 176 pixel videos at 14 frames per second. The Roxio Media Manager desktop software that comes along makes transcosing videos very easy.

The BlackBerry Curve 8330 readily accepts an 8GB SanDisk card.

A striking positive for the phone was the five and a half hour continuous talk-time.

The Curve can even double-up as a tethered modem for your laptop.
The extended-life battery and an unlocked GSM slot for world travelers sets the new standard for other smartphones to catch up.

HTC Ozone (Verizon Wireless)

The HTC Ozone is a small phone with 4.5 x 2.5 inches and a weight of 3.7 ounces. It is a messaging-centric phone and runs on Windows Mobile 6.1. It comes with Microsoft Direct push Technology for a real-time delivery of e-mails and can automatically sync up with the Outlook calendar, contacts and tasks using the Exchange Server. One can use POP3 and IMAP accounts for an integrated mailbox.

Since the phone uses a Windows Mobile 6.1 platform, it comes with the usual Microsoft Office Mobile that enables one to edit documents and has PIM tools like task list, calendar, alarm clock and calculator.

The user interface from Microsoft looks a tad stale but the integrated Wi-Fi and a dual-mode phone supporting CDMA and GSM networks more than make up for it.

The HTC Ozone has voice features like speed-dial, speaker-phone, conference calling, voice dialing and voice commands. The Bluetooth on it supports mono and stereo Bluetooth headphones, hands-free, PAN, file transfer and object push.

The 2 mega-pixel camera does not take very great pictures but is still satisfactory.

The quality of the voice call is quite decent with minimal background noise. The signal reception was good with strong and clear voices.

The HTC Ozone is powered by a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor and the phone’s response to user actions was quick. It can 256 MB of flash memory and the microUSB slot can accommodate cards upto 16 GB.

The overall build quality feels a little plastic-like.

It is shipped with a mobile charger having international adapters, a USB cable, a software CD, reference material and a wired headphone adapter.

With a messaging-centric focus, a talk-time of 4.8 hours, Wi-Fi support, dual-mode operation and a price tag starting at $49.99, the HTC Ozone makes it to the top three budget Smartphones for Business.
