fijitsuWell Intel has just come clean on its plan for one of its most popular chips the Atom. Turns out the next variation of the little powerhouse will be called PineTrail and is set to debut at CES in a few weeks. More over, Fujitsu has announced its MH380 netbook which will feature the Atom processor as well as 2GB of RAM, 250GB hard disk drive, Bluetooth, six cell battery and a 10.1 inch screen that boasts 1366×768 pixels.

NYT offers $100 rebate off Samsung Go for first time subscribers

nyt-netbookWith the inevitable fall of print media eminent, newspaper companies are treading water and figuring out how to still keep customers and make the money they once did.

New York Times is offering a deal to first time subscribers until March 2010. In the deal, new subscribers to the Times Reader 2.0 will get $100 of a new Samsung Go netbook. The netbook will come preloaded with the Times Reader Adobe Air-based application which will push content from the newspaper company to subscribers laptops. The machine will be sold exclusively through J&R Music and Computer World.

As for the cost of subscription, its pegged at $179.40 for one year, so you’re not exactly saving here unless you were going to buy a netbook and subscribe to NYT before.

But its nice to see a newspaper taking a bold step to stay in business instead of crying for bailout funds.

Japan retailers get the jump on the U.S. market today as they get to sell Dell’s new laptop, the Inspiron Mini 12, before anyone here in the U.S. even gets to lay eyes upon it. While built-to-order models will be available in the states by mid-November, three retail chains in Japan (Bic Camera, Kujima, and Sofmap) get the first crack at selling preconfigured versions of Dell’s 12.1-inch take on the mini-note space.

You read that right: a netbook with a 12.1-inch CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) illuminated screen. That’s larger than some ultraportable notebooks currently on the market — and a pretty significant jump from Dell’s first stab at the mini-note space. The Inspiron Mini 9 had small solid state drives, a tiny 8.9-inch screen and honestly, some pokey performance. I mean, you keep expectations in check when it comes to netbook performance, but the mini 9 garnered a sadsack score of 26 in WorldBench (as opposed to the average score of about 35).
