IC3 issues warning about another scam email

Published: Apr 28th, 2009 | Author: Crank Up Add Comment

The Internet Crime Complaint Center has issues warning about an increasing new email scam. According to their website:

Circulation of Fraudulent E-mail Claiming To Be From U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

A spam e-mail claiming to be from former CBP Assistant Commissioner, Thomas S. Winkowski, is currently being circulated. This attempt to defraud is the typical e-mail scam using the name and reputation of a federal government official to create an air of authenticity.

The spam e-mail indicates the CBP has stopped a Diplomat who is carrying a consignment to be delivered to the recipient’s residence. This consignment allegedly contains millions of dollars, which is revealed to be an inheritance for the e-mail recipient.

As with many other scams, this e-mail advises the recipient they will be permitted to access this inheritance once the recipient has given the sender of the e-mail their personal information.

This e-mail is a hoax. Do not respond.

The U.S. CBP does not send unsolicited e-mails. Consumers should not respond to unsolicited e-mails or click on any embedded links, as they may contain viruses or malware.

It is imperative consumers guard their personally identifiable information (PII). Examples of a person’s PII include, but are not limited to: date of birth; social security number; and bank account numbers. Providing your PII will compromise your identity.

Fake Military Twist On Vehicle Sale Scams

Published: Mar 9th, 2009 | Author: Crank Up Add Comment

Are you thinking about buying a vehicle online? Then this is something you should know. FBI has said that they continue to receive reports of individuals victimized while attempting to purchase vehicles via the Internet.

From their website

Victims find attractively priced vehicles advertised at different Internet classified ad sites. Most of the scams include some type of third-party vehicle protection program to ensure a safe transaction. After receiving convincing e-mails from the phony vehicle protection program, the victims are directed to send either the full payment, or a percentage of the payment, to the third-party agent via a wire payment service. No vehicles are delivered to the victims.

In a new twist, scammers are posing as members of the United States military. The fictitious military personnel in the scam have either been sent to a foreign country to improve military relations, or they need to sell a vehicle quickly and cheaply because of their upcoming deployment to either Iraq or Afghanistan.

Consumers are advised to do as much due diligence as possible before engaging in transactions to purchase vehicles advertised online. Consumers are also cautioned to be aware of the rules of or warnings posted by the Internet sites they visit. If someone is asking a consumer to break or avoid the rules of the Web site, it is possible that person is trying to scam you.

If you have fallen victim to this type of scam, please notify the IC3 by filing a complaint at www.IC3.gov.

The 10$ laptop is here

Published: Feb 4th, 2009 | Author: Crank Up 4 Comments

The Indian Government is all set to display the Rs 500 laptop on 3 February 2009 in Tirupati, at the launch of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology.

The Rs 500 laptop has been developed by students of Vellore Institute of Technology, scientists at Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Madras and Semiconductor Complex, a public sector undertaking. It would be equipped with 2 GB of memory, WiFi, fixed Ethernet, expandable memory, and consume just 2 watts of power, say media reports.

At this stage, the price of the laptop is working out to be $20 but with mass production it is bound to come down, reports The Economic Times.

In November 2005, at the World Summit on the Information Society held in Tunis, Massachussets Institute of Technology’s (MIT) Nicholas Negroponte, unveiled a $100 laptop computer, The Children’s Machine, designed for students in the developing world. The project is part of a broader programme by One Laptop Per Child, a non-profit organisation started by Negroponte and other Media Lab faculty, to extend Internet access in developing countries.

Many companies were working hard to break the sub-$100 notebook price point since its launch. But, ultimately India is ready to showcase a notebook that costs only $10, which is so far the cheapest computing device in India.

10$ laptop? Sounds cool. If this is real and if India will be able to manufacture these laptops then it will laptops will no longer be a dream for people in rural areas. but here some of my thoughts about this laptop.

  1. The laptop consumes only 2 watts of power? : The lowest power consumption processor needs 2.4 watts how can the entire laptop (screen, wifi, keybaord) consume only 2 watts of power?
  2. Wifi : Wifi in India is still not popular. What is the use of wifi in a place where people don’t know what is wifi.
  3. Linux OS : At this cost I am sure that the OS will not be windows. How many of you find it easy to operate a linux box. If this laptop is mainly concentrated for children? I am sure they will have hard time using this laptop.

There are lots of unanswere questions like HDD capacity, the scree size etc. Lets hope this is real ;-)

FBI warns about “Work at homes” jobs

Published: Feb 3rd, 2009 | Author: Crank Up Add Comment

FBI has issues warning about increasing “work at home” scams. This is what they say in their website.

Consumers need to be vigilant when seeking employment on-line. The IC3 continues to receive numerous complaints from individuals who have fallen victim to work-at-home scams.

Victims are often hired to “process payments”, “transfer funds” or “reship products.” These job scams involve the victims receiving and cashing fraudulent checks, transferring illegally obtained funds for the criminals, or receiving stolen merchandise and shipping it to the criminals.

Other victims sign up to be a “mystery shopper”, receiving fraudulent checks with instructions to cash the checks and wire the funds to “test” a company’s services. Victims are told they will be compensated with a portion of the merchandise or funds.

Work-at-home schemes attract otherwise innocent individuals, causing them to become part of criminal schemes without realizing they are engaging in illegal behavior.

Job scams often provide criminals the opportunity to commit identity theft when victims provide their personal information, sometimes even bank account information to their potential “employer.” The criminal/employer can then use the victim’s information to open credit cards, post on-line auctions, register Web sites, etc., in the victim’s name to commit additional crimes.

If you have been a victim of Internet crime you can fill a complaint at http://www.ic3.gov/
