Spam 2.0

There is a funny (and true) quote about software engineering!

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning

This is somewhat correct when it comes to Spamming! Spammers are coming with new ideas of spamming everyday. Last month I read a post in Digit forum in which users were complaining about a new way of spamming.

Spam bots register in forums and ask questions which look genuine and after few minutes they register with another user name and answer this question with a link to their site.

Today I had a new experience. I had the following comment for one of my posts.

Hi, I found your blog on this new directory of WordPress Blogs at blackhatbootcamp.com/listofwordpressblogs. I don’t know how your blog came up, must have been a typo, i duno. Anyways, I just clicked it and here I am. Your blog looks good. Have a nice day. James.

It looked genuine to me at first. Even my favourite Akismet plugin, which had protected me from 3379 spam comments so far, failed in this case. I did a quick google search for this comment and as I suspected our great James has comments 1000s of blogs with the same comment. Good try James :)

Haha, no just kidding! I too got that exact same comment on my

wordpress blog. Askimet didn’t see it coming, which is surprising because I’m sure

hundreds of people have already flagged that exact same comment as spam. A bit

disappointing really from Askimet.

I must say that the

culprit is smart but not as smart as you are. Anyway,I also discovered some smart ways on

how some bloggers can fool us. It is not a spam but I think it’s worst enough – Cheating

the subscribers counter widget!

Imagine a blog has only five posts and having 5,000+

subscribers, can you believe it? Yes, you will if you are not smart enough.

Hey, blackhatbootcamp guy is an intelligent hacker. The comment you have quoted in the

post is just a spam comment. He develops such tools and such tools will do all these

things for him. You just go through his blog and you will notice his posts where he

appraises himself of all these. Also, he develops different tools for all these purposes.

But remember one thing, his blog is good and worth subscribing… :-)
