Nokia has opened up the world to a new phenomenon called the N900. This new smartphone is not only very smart, but has such a plethora of features that you will no doubt be wanting to get your hands on one. It is coming out soon and currently is beating the competition. Take a look at this quick review article and see if you think this Nokia flagship is not the best yet.

The Nokia N900 ( also called the Rover or RX-51 ) has gotten a little bit of pre-release hoopla. Nokia decided to tell the world a bit early about this landmark event. The shining aspect of the N900 is more than likely the brand new operating system. This is made by none other than Linux, the popular “Windows-killer’ software. The name of the top-secret version was “Fremantle”, but now that it is close to being released, the true name is revealed; “Maemo 5″. You will be using this very soon if you are a mobile device addict. Do you want to show all your IM contacts, including Facebook and Twitter on one page ? You can do it with the N900, Maemo 5 and the included Mauku application. Do you want to keep track of all your outdoor activities and sports using GPS ? You can do it with the N900, Maemo 5 and eCoach. There is much more you can do. You can copy and paste all text without restrictions. You can save money on calls by using the Skype feature. Just use Wi-Fi instead of your local cell carrier to make a call. You can see the forecast with the included weather widget. Cruising the internet is a breeze with a browser made by the same people that brought the world Firefox.

With all that computing ability, you need computing power. The N900 has it. It comes with what Nokia calls a “powerful” ( yes, it is ) processor made by ARM Cortex. It pumps out information at 600 Megahertz and allow you to multi task with impunity and not get slowed down. Back up that speed with the one Gigabyte of application memory and you are cooking with gas ! There is 256 Megabytes of Random Access Memory ( RAM ), 768 of virtual memory, and a 3D graphics accelerator that will keep a smile on the face of the most hardcore multi tasker. We have not gotten to the internal storage yet. You have enough internal storage in the N900 to hear 7,000 of your favorite MP3 songs or 40 of your favorite DVD videos. That is before you connect a 16 Megabyte MicroSD card for even more songs or graphics.

The resistive touch screen is delightful with a 800 by 480 pixel resolution. Icons are shown brightly and are designed well. You can view the screen in both landscape and regular mode. The screen has a keyboard if you want to use it instead of the included hardware slide out keyboard. The slide out ( it slides out from the side to give more room for typing ) keyboard has a full QWERTY layout and comes with directional arrows just like your laptop or computer at home. Nokia advertises this as a mobile computer. I tend to agree with them.

Do not forget that the Nokia N900 is also a phone. You have the same abilities with this device as you do with a full-featured cell phone. You have access to quad band GSM and tri band WCDMA. You will be seeing this delivered by T-Mobile, which is the carrier for these types of mobile devices. The camera is not an “after thought” and can deliver five Megapixel photos. You have Carl Zeiss optics that increase the quality of the photos. Nokia even included a lens cover. Yes, the camera can take video. There is so much you can do with the N900 that you will no doubt want to see it in person. It will be available in the coming months with a predicted October launch.

dang good review. i love my n900. screen is nice, slide out keyboard is easy to use. probably my favorite unlocked phones of 2010. has a fast processor, great email and gps which are both great for my business. my wife loves hers for the facebook and nokia apps and my daughter likes hers for the games and camera for her and her friends. these are way better than our old unlocked htc phones. the battery life is a lot longer too. the phone is a little thicker than i hoped but that’s alright. the web browser keeps me in the loop when i’m on the road a long time too. got our last 3 unlocked world phones at gsmallover.com and we love them. 2 thumbs way up
