A skill that will last a long time

The stereotyped position is that you cannot possibly bargain on modern technology such as the iPad. This thinking argues that the prices will be already set in stone by the manufacturer or retailer based on their internal costs and the profit margins that they can make within that market. Haggling is therefore futile because the retailer will have costs to meet and the manufacturer will have profit margins to take care of. I do not believe in this theory. Anything in the world can be negotiated and certainly an iPad is up for negotiation. I also believe that the retailers set their initial prices at a particular margin expecting to face some bargaining. If you go straight for the iPad headline price, you will only be creating excess profit for the retailer.

The terms of the negotiation and the level to which you can bring down the price will vary greatly depending on your skills, the retailer who is selling you the iPad and the general market conditions. These variations are to be expected but what is not to be expected is you to capitulate without a fight and effectively give away your money without considering that you could have made some savings on your iPad. In order to make the bargain, you will need to have some background information about the iPad itself and the retailer. For example if you know that that iPad has been sold at a certain price next door then you can challenge the retailer to give you the same price. I have known of scams where someone buys something from one shop and then adds a little profit then sells it next door. You need to move around to make sure that you are paying the right price for your iPad.

What you need to know about your iPad

1. You need to understand that there is s wide variety of providers who can fluctuate in price for up to fifty percent. Ideally you should aim to get your iPad at the lowest price on the market but if you cannot attain this ideal, then you need to work towards this goal. Success will be relative but if you can get close to the minimum price then you know that your iPad is a good deal.

2. Generally speaking the manufacturer tends to provide much lower prices than the retailer. This is because the iPad that you buy from the manufacturer direct will only have one set of profit levels to satisfy whereas if you go to the retailer they will have both the manufacture and retail profit margins to make. This is why a lot of effort will be made to discourage you from going to the manufacturer direct. However you should not give up because ultimately it is about getting the best deal that you can.

3. Supermarkets sell everything these days and the iPad is not completely immune to them. It might take some time before they have the iPads at the prices that they feel comfortable with but it will happen in the end and you need to be there to take advantage.
