If you have not heard it yet, the hottest news about Gmail is that you can enable Gmail for offline access. Meaning once you enable Gmail for offline access you will be able to use it like any other email application (Outlook, Thunderbird etc).

You will be able to read and reply to emails even if your internet connection is down. Your replies will be sent as soon as the internet connection is up.

New mails will be downloaded as soon as the browser detects an active internet connection. Gmail offline access is enabled using Google Gears.

Here is how you can enable this feature for your gmail account. Never activate this in a shared or public computer.

  • Login to your Gmail account (make sure you are using the standard edition and not basic HTML)
  • Click Settings
  • Select the labs tab

  • You should see the option to enable Gmail Offline access. Select “Enable” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes”

Your inbox will be reloaded and you should see a new menu item named “offline” as shown below

Clicking the offline menu will install Google gears. Once the browser is restarted you should be able to use Gmail even when the internet is down.
